Despite my worries about the wind, yesterday’s camp site was secluded enough to keep us protected from all but the worst gusts. Last night’s excitement was javelinas fighting nearby around 10:30 … there were grunts, and squeals and breaking branches for several minutes before they moved on. Somehow Parker managed to sleep through the entire show! Was glad our food was away from the tent & up in a tree.
Today’s hike was awesome—knowing we had ‘only’ 15 miles to go and a hotel room w/a shower and a bed waiting for us made every hill a little easier. The scenery was beautiful all day—not the spectacular views from day 1, but beautiful landscapes that reminded me of our trip to Argentina last fall.
The final 3 miles into town were on a paved road—boring and un-scenic, but flat & level … we booked them in less than 50 minutes (for my ultra-running friends, that may sound slow, but w/a pack and 3 long days in a row, we felt like we were flying … by far the fastest miles of the trip).
We passed an RV park just outside town and an older gentleman called out to us, “congratulations—you made it through the first leg! Appreciate your ability to walk … there’s plenty that can’t!” Not gonna lie—I teared up just a bit … made my day that he recognized our accomplishment and gave me some much-needed perspective.
We rolled into a Patagonia just before 2:00pm … ready for a shower, a burger and re-supply. We hit town bingo water and, except for a few snacks from today’s ration, bingo food—perfect planning! Had plenty of time for Parker to shower, eat & help me get squared away for my solo stint (about which, I’m just a little nervous).
The weather forecast is calling for some nasty weather tomorrow (and Tues morning) with rain, snow/sleet and high winds. I have decided to hole up here in town for an extra day to beat the worst of it. I’m feeling about 20% like a wuss, but 80% like a wise woman making the smart call … I’m going to try to focus on that 80% tonight & tomorrow as I am tempted to second-guess my decision. Meanwhile, I’m gonna enjoy the hard cider & Hershey bar I found at the local market while I catch up on the outside world a bit and luxuriate in being clean and not having to put on shoes and go out in the cold to pee tonight!
